What the card is built around
The Discover it Miles is built around earning simplicity. There are no categories to track, no quarterly activation, no enrollment requirements, and no annual spending cap on miles. Every purchase earns 1.5x miles regardless of merchant, category, or amount. Miles never expire and there is no annual cap on accumulation.
The Miles Match makes the first year unusually valuable. Discover automatically matches every mile earned in the first cardmember year — if you earn 40,000 miles, Discover adds 40,000 more for a total of 80,000. This gives new cardholders an effective earning rate of 3 miles per dollar in year one, which compares favorably to cards with annual fees. The card is designed for cardholders who want travel-oriented rewards without managing a points ecosystem or paying for premium benefits they do not use.
How the earning structure works in practice
No category management required
Unlike rotating-category cards, the Discover it Miles earns the same rate on every transaction. There is no list of bonus categories, no need to activate quarterly offers, and no ceiling on any spending segment. A cardholder who spends $2,000 per month earns 3,000 miles per month (1.5x × $2,000), consistently, without tracking merchant codes or calendar quarters.
Miles Match in year one
At the end of the first cardmember year, Discover matches the total miles earned — including the 1.5x base on all purchases — at no additional cost and without any redemption or request. The match effectively converts the earn rate to 3 miles per dollar for the first year only. This is a one-time benefit; in subsequent years, the card earns at the base 1.5x rate.
Miles value and flexibility
Each mile is worth 1 cent when redeemed for travel statement credits or cash direct deposit. The value is fixed — miles do not fluctuate in value based on redemption category. There are no airline or hotel transfer partners; miles are a straightforward 1-cent-per-mile currency. A cardholder who accumulates 50,000 miles has $500 in travel credit or $500 in cash.

Security and account features
Freeze It
The Discover app includes a Freeze It feature that lets cardholders instantly freeze and unfreeze the account. When frozen, new purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers are declined while recurring charges and payments continue uninterrupted. Useful as an immediate action if a card is misplaced.
$0 Fraud Liability and Dark Web Monitoring
Discover provides a $0 fraud liability guarantee — cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized charges. Discover also monitors the Dark Web for your Social Security number and alerts you if it is detected, at no additional cost. SSN alert monitoring for new credit inquiries is also available.
Free FICO Credit Score
Discover provides your FICO Credit Score on each monthly statement and in the app at no cost. The score updates monthly and is also accessible to non-cardholders through Discover's Credit Scorecard program.
