What the card is built around

The Discover it Cash Back is structured around quarterly rotating categories that earn 5% cash back. Each quarter, Discover designates a set of featured categories — such as gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, Amazon.com, or PayPal — and cardholders who activate the offer earn 5% on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in those categories for that quarter. Purchases above the quarterly cap, and all purchases outside the featured categories, earn 1%.

The Cashback Match is the card's most distinctive feature: at the end of the first cardmember year, Discover automatically matches every dollar of cash back earned with no minimum, no maximum, and no action required from the cardholder. A cardholder who earns $400 over the year finishes with $800. This makes the first year significantly more valuable than subsequent years and effectively doubles the card's earning rate for new cardholders.

How the earning structure works in practice

Quarterly activation requirement

Each quarter, Discover announces the featured 5% categories. Cardholders must actively activate the offer — through the Discover website, app, or phone — before the end of the quarter to earn 5% on eligible purchases. Purchases made before activation or in quarters where you did not activate earn only 1%. Activation takes less than a minute and can be done as soon as the new quarter's categories are announced.

The $1,500 quarterly cap

The 5% rate applies to the first $1,500 in combined purchases within the featured quarterly categories each quarter. After $1,500, additional purchases in those categories earn 1%. The maximum 5% cash back per quarter at the cap is $75 ($1,500 × 5%). Over four quarters at the cap, that is $300 in 5% cash back annually — before Cashback Match. Purchases outside the featured categories earn 1% with no cap.

Cashback Match in year one

At the end of the first cardmember year, Discover matches the total cash back earned across all purchases — both the 5% category earnings and the 1% base earnings — with no minimum or maximum. The match is automatic and requires no redemption. The effective first-year earn rate is therefore 10% on qualifying rotating category purchases (up to cap) and 2% on all other spending, making year one substantially more valuable than subsequent years.

Redemption options

Redemption type How it works Practical read
Statement credit Apply earned cash back as a credit against your Discover card balance. Minimum redemption amounts may apply — verify with Discover. The most direct option. Cash back value is equal to its face value; no conversion required.
Direct deposit Transfer earned cash back to a linked bank account as a direct deposit. Useful for cardholders who prefer cash in their bank account rather than a statement offset.
Amazon checkout Use cash back to pay for Amazon purchases at checkout when your Discover card is linked to your Amazon account. Convenient for Amazon shoppers. Value is at face value — no discount or penalty for using this option.
Gift cards and PayPal Redeem cash back for gift cards from a selection of retailers, or use through PayPal at participating merchants. Verify current partner list with Discover. Value typically matches face value. Gift card options can be useful for specific merchants but offer no uplift in value.

Security and account features

Freeze It

The Discover app includes a Freeze It feature that lets cardholders instantly freeze and unfreeze their account with a single tap. When the card is frozen, new purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers are declined while recurring charges and payments continue to process. This is useful if a card is misplaced but not confirmed lost or stolen.

Dark Web Monitoring and SSN alerts

Discover monitors thousands of Dark Web sites for your Social Security number and alerts you if it is found. Cardholders can also sign up to receive alerts if their SSN is found on any new credit applications. These features are available to all Discover cardholders at no additional cost and do not require a separate subscription.

Free FICO Credit Score

Discover provides your FICO Credit Score on each monthly statement and in the Discover app at no cost. The score is updated monthly and reflects the score used by many lenders. This feature is available to all Discover cardholders and is also accessible without a Discover card through the Discover Credit Scorecard program.

FAQ

Discover it Cash Back questions.

Does the Discover it Cash Back have an annual fee?

No. The Discover it Cash Back has no annual fee. It earns 5% cash back on rotating quarterly categories up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter (activation required), then 1% on those categories above the cap, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

How does the Cashback Match work?

At the end of the first cardmember year, Discover automatically matches all the cash back you earned during that year — no minimum, no maximum, no action required. If you earned $350 in cash back, Discover adds another $350, bringing your total to $700. The match covers all cash back from both the 5% rotating categories and the 1% base rate.

Do I need to activate the 5% quarterly categories?

Purchases made in the featured categories before you activate, or in quarters where you do not activate, earn only 1%. Categories rotate each quarter — check the Discover cashback calendar for current and upcoming categories.

What happens when I hit the $1,500 quarterly cap?

Once you spend $1,500 in the featured quarterly categories in a given quarter, additional purchases in those categories earn 1% rather than 5%. The cap resets each quarter. Purchases outside the featured categories earn 1% with no cap at any point during the year.
