What this card is built around

The Surpass is designed for Hilton loyalists who want strong earn rates at Hilton properties, automatic Gold status, and a meaningful points backstop for everyday spending at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations. The resort credit and Priority Pass visits add travel value, and the spend-triggered Free Night Award gives the card a path to an outsized annual benefit if you can reach $15,000 in purchases.

A key point: this card earns Hilton Honors Points, not American Express Membership Rewards. Points go directly into your Hilton Honors account. They cannot be transferred to Amex airline partners — only to Hilton's own redemption ecosystem (hotel stays, Milestone Bonuses, and Hilton's airline transfer program, which offers poor ratios). The best return on Hilton Honors Points is almost always hotel stays at Hilton properties.

Earning rates in context

Hilton stays

The 12x card rate stacks on top of base Hilton Honors member points earned during stays. Hilton Honors members earn base points as part of the loyalty program — the 12x from this card is added to whatever your loyalty-tier base rate is, which can push total earn significantly higher on Hilton stays.

U.S. everyday categories

6x at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations covers the three most common consumer spending categories. Hilton points are worth less per point than Membership Rewards in most transfer scenarios, so the effective value-per-dollar depends on how you plan to redeem. The earn rate is high in absolute terms.

Online retail and base

4x on U.S. online retail is a category not often bonused by hotel co-brand cards. The 3x base rate on everything else is reasonable for a co-brand card and ensures all spending builds toward Hilton Honors redemptions.

Hilton Honors Gold status

Automatic Gold

Gold status is maintained automatically for as long as the card remains open — no minimum nights or spend required to retain it. This removes the need to reach Hilton's organic Gold threshold of 40 qualifying nights or 75,000 base points per year.

What Gold includes

Hilton Honors Gold members receive a 25% bonus on base Hilton Honors Points earned during eligible stays, room upgrades (subject to availability), and access to the 80th Percentile of Hilton's complimentary room upgrade pool. Property-level benefits vary. Gold does not include automatic complimentary breakfast at most properties.

Path to Diamond at $40,000

Spending $40,000 or more on eligible purchases in a calendar year earns Hilton Honors Diamond status for the remainder of that calendar year and the following full calendar year. Diamond is Hilton's highest status tier, adding 50% bonus points, complimentary breakfast at many properties, 5th night free on standard room award stays, and top priority for upgrades.

Resort credit and Free Night Award

Benefit Structure Practical read
$200 Hilton Resort Credit Up to $100 in statement credits per semi-annual period (Jan–Jun and Jul–Dec) for eligible purchases at Hilton resorts, up to $200 per calendar year total. Requires eligible Hilton resort purchases. Confirm which properties and charge types qualify with American Express before planning. Splits across two windows, so unused balance in one period does not roll forward.
Free Night Award One Free Night Award after spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year. Valid at most Hilton properties; can cover room rates up to 150,000 Hilton Honors Points per night. No blackout dates for standard rooms. The 150,000-point cap covers a large range of Hilton properties including many full-service hotels. This benefit can offset most or all of the $150 annual fee if you use it at a property that would cost $200+ per night. The $15,000 spend threshold tracks by calendar year (January–December).
National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive Status Complimentary Emerald Club Executive status at National Car Rental for eligible cardholders. Useful for frequent car renters who prefer National; provides access to the Executive selection area and Emerald Aisle perks.

Lounge access

Program Access type Visit limits
Priority Pass Select Membership in Priority Pass Select, providing access to 1,300+ airport lounges in the Priority Pass network worldwide. 10 complimentary visits per year. Additional visits charged at $35 per person per visit. Enrollment may be required. Guest policies vary by lounge.

How Hilton Honors Points work

Redemption for hotel stays

Hilton Honors Points are most valuable when redeemed for standard room award nights at Hilton properties. Hilton uses a dynamic pricing model for most awards, so points required per night vary by property, date, and demand. The 5th Night Free benefit available to Diamond members (and available to all members on standard award stays at five or more consecutive nights) can reduce the effective cost of multi-night stays.

Milestone Bonus program

Hilton's Milestone Bonus program awards bonus points when members earn a specified number of base points in a calendar year. Card spending counts toward base point thresholds. Hitting certain milestones can yield large lump-sum point bonuses that increase the effective return on spend.

Airline transfers (avoid)

Hilton Honors Points can be transferred to airline miles, but the ratio is typically 10,000 Hilton points for 1,000–2,000 airline miles depending on the partner. This is a poor rate. Unless you have a specific use case with a transfer bonus or specific airline sweet spot, hotel redemptions or Milestone Bonuses almost always produce better value per point.

No foreign transaction fees

The Surpass charges no foreign transaction fees, making it usable internationally for Hilton stays and other purchases without an added fee on each transaction.

This card fits if…

  • You stay at Hilton properties regularly and want to earn points directly into your Hilton Honors account without routing through Membership Rewards.
  • You can use the $200 resort credit ($100 per semi-annual period) — it requires eligible Hilton resort spending in each window to capture the full value.
  • The Free Night Award after $15,000 spend represents real value at a Hilton property you would stay at anyway — at a high-value property the award can easily exceed the $150 annual fee.
  • Automatic Gold status has meaning for your Hilton stay frequency — 25% bonus points and room upgrades are more valuable if you stay at Hilton properties multiple times per year.
  • 10 Priority Pass visits per year covers your actual airport lounge use — if you need unlimited visits, the Aspire is the upgrade path.
  • The $40,000 Diamond path is achievable for high spenders who want Diamond without meeting Hilton's organic night threshold.

Where this card is not the best fit

  • You prefer a flexible points currency. Hilton Honors Points are locked to Hilton's ecosystem — there is no path to Amex airline partners from this card.
  • You need more than 10 Priority Pass lounge visits per year — the Aspire card provides unlimited visits for $550/year.
  • You want automatic Diamond status without spending $40,000 — the Aspire provides Diamond from day one.
  • Most of your hotel spending is outside Hilton. The Surpass's 3x base rate on non-Hilton stays is competitive but the real value is concentrated in Hilton properties.

FAQ

Hilton Honors Amex Surpass questions.

Does the Surpass earn Membership Rewards points?

No. The Surpass is a Hilton co-branded card that earns Hilton Honors Points directly, not Membership Rewards. Points go into your Hilton Honors account and are best redeemed for Hilton hotel stays. They cannot be transferred to Amex airline or hotel transfer partners.

How does the Free Night Award work?

After spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year (January through December), you earn one Free Night Award valid at most Hilton properties, covering room rates up to 150,000 Hilton Honors Points per night with no blackout dates on standard rooms. Verify the expiration window and any eligible property restrictions with American Express at time of earning.

What Hilton status does the Surpass provide?

Automatic Hilton Honors Gold status while the card is open. Gold gives a 25% bonus on base points and room upgrades subject to availability. Spending $40,000 or more on eligible purchases in a calendar year earns Diamond status for the remainder of that year and the full following calendar year.

How does the $200 resort credit split?

Up to $100 in statement credits per semi-annual period: January through June, and July through December. Unused credit in one period does not carry forward. Total is up to $200 per calendar year. Eligible purchases must be at Hilton resorts — verify qualifying properties and charge types with American Express before planning.

Does the Surpass include Priority Pass lounge access?

Yes — Priority Pass Select membership with 10 complimentary lounge visits per year. Additional visits are charged at $35 per person. Enrollment may be required. For unlimited Priority Pass visits, the Aspire card offers that benefit at its $550 annual fee.
