Card snapshot
What the card is built around
The Business Platinum is a premium travel and business card positioned around lounge access, elevated travel earning, a meaningful pay-with-points rebate, and a stack of annual statement credits. Its $695 annual fee is substantial; the card is typically most valuable to businesses with significant travel spend booked through amextravel.com and executives who use airport lounges frequently enough to extract value from the access.
Multiplier details that matter
5x booking requirement
The 5x rate on flights and prepaid hotels requires booking through amextravel.com. Flights booked directly with airlines or through other third-party travel portals do not earn 5x under this structure. Confirm that amextravel.com pricing is competitive before committing to a booking path solely for points.
1.5x business categories
The 1.5x rate covers a broad set of business categories — construction, electronics, manufacturing, industrial supplies, software, U.S. shipping, airlines, advertising, and telecommunications — plus any single purchase of $5,000 or more regardless of category. The combined annual cap means heavy spenders should track when they approach the ceiling. Verify the current cap and eligible category definitions with American Express.
Booking path trade-off
The 5x rate and the 35% Pay with Points rebate both favor booking through amextravel.com, but direct bookings with airlines often provide elite status credit, seat upgrades, and cancellation flexibility that amextravel.com bookings may not. Weigh the points differential against status and service implications for each trip.
35% Pay with Points airline rebate
When you use Pay with Points to pay for all or part of a flight on your one selected qualifying airline, the Business Platinum returns 35% of the redeemed points as a rebate. The rebate is capped at 1,000,000 bonus points per calendar year. This effectively lowers the point cost of flights on your selected airline and can make Pay with Points more competitive with transfer partner redemptions for domestic or short-haul itineraries. You must select a qualifying airline; verify the selection process and eligible airlines with American Express.
Lounge access
Statement credits
Global Entry / TSA PreCheck fee credit
The Business Platinum provides a statement credit of up to $120 toward a Global Entry application fee. Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck eligibility. The credit is available once every 4.5 years per card. If TSA PreCheck alone is preferred, the credit can apply to that application instead (subject to the $120 cap). Verify current terms with American Express.
Transfer partners and redemption strategy
Business Platinum earns Membership Rewards points transferable to 18+ airline and hotel partners — the same pool available to the consumer Amex Platinum. Common airline transfer paths include Aeroplan, ANA, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Executive Club, Flying Blue, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Transfers are typically not reversible; search award space before transferring.
Pay with Points vs. transfer
The 35% rebate makes Pay with Points on the selected qualifying airline more competitive for domestic and short-haul routes where transfer-partner redemptions are less likely to provide strong upside. For premium international routes, transfer partners often produce better effective value per point.
5x + transfer combination
Booking flights through amextravel.com earns 5x MR points, which can then be transferred to airline partners for future travel. This is only additive if amextravel.com pricing is at or near direct airline pricing and the booking terms are acceptable.
Credit stacking
The Business Platinum's credits can offset a significant portion of the $695 annual fee — but only if your business naturally uses the eligible services. Sum only credits you would use at full value without forcing new spend.
No foreign transaction fees
The Business Platinum does not charge foreign transaction fees on eligible purchases. This is expected at this fee tier and makes the card straightforward for international business travel spending.
Fit checklist
- Your business books meaningful travel through amextravel.com, or you are willing to shift travel bookings there to capture 5x.
- You travel frequently enough through airports with Centurion Lounges or Priority Pass locations to extract value from lounge access.
- You can use enough of the annual statement credits at full value (airline fees, CLEAR, Indeed, Adobe, wireless) to offset the $695 fee.
- You want the 35% Pay with Points rebate for flights on a selected qualifying airline.
- You want Global Entry or TSA PreCheck covered every 4.5 years.
