What the card is built around
The Business Gold is a Membership Rewards card for businesses with variable or concentrated spending across a set of common business categories. Rather than requiring you to choose a fixed earning category at enrollment, the card's system automatically determines the 2 eligible categories where your business spent the most each billing cycle and applies the 4x rate to those purchases. The remaining spend earns 1x.
Eligible 4x categories
Airfare and shipping
Airfare purchased directly from airlines; U.S. purchases for shipping. These tend to be business-essential categories with high per-transaction spend.
Technology and advertising
U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud solutions; U.S. purchases for advertising in select media. Verify which specific vendors and media types qualify with American Express.
Gas and restaurants
U.S. purchases at gas stations; U.S. purchases at restaurants. These are common daily business expense categories for field teams, deliveries, and in-person meetings.
How automatic category selection works
At the end of each billing cycle, the system looks at your spending across the 6 eligible categories and identifies the top 2 by dollar amount. Those 2 categories receive the 4x rate for that cycle. You do not need to enroll in a category or make any selections. If your spending pattern shifts, the selected categories shift with it. The $150,000 annual cap applies to the combined total of eligible purchases across both selected 4x categories, not per category.
Statement credits
Transfer partners and redemption
Business Gold earns Membership Rewards points, which are the same MR points earned by the consumer Amex Gold and Amex Platinum. Points can be transferred to 18+ airline and hotel partners. Useful airline transfer paths commonly include Aeroplan, ANA, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Executive Club, Flying Blue, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Transfer ratios and partner availability can change; search award space before transferring because MR transfers are typically not reversible.
Transfer for travel
Airline transfers can produce meaningful value when award space is available, particularly for international premium cabin itineraries or programs with strong partner award pricing.
Simple redemptions
Points can also be used toward travel booked through Amex Travel, statement credits, gift cards, and other options. These paths are simpler but generally produce lower value per point than strong transfer redemptions.
Risk to manage
Account for taxes, fees, partner transfer times (which can take minutes to days), cancellation rules, and whether the cash fare is something you would actually pay before committing points to a transfer.
Employee cards
Employee cards can be added to the Business Gold at no additional cost. Employee spending is billed to the main account and can count toward the eligible business categories tracked each billing cycle for the 4x rate. Verify current employee card terms and any spending controls available with American Express.
No foreign transaction fees
The Business Gold does not charge foreign transaction fees on eligible purchases, which makes it usable for international business travel without that added cost layer. Always confirm current terms before relying on this for a specific trip.
What the card does not include
The Business Gold does not include airport lounge access. It does not include travel protections at the level of the Business Platinum. Cardholders who need lounge access or elevated travel insurance should compare against the Business Platinum or hold both cards for different use cases.
Fit checklist
- Your business spending is concentrated enough in 1 or 2 of the 6 eligible categories to make the 4x rate meaningful at scale.
- Your annual spend in those categories approaches or exceeds the $150,000 combined cap, or you want to max the cap before it resets.
- You already use, or would naturally use, one or more of the monthly Flexible Business Credit partners.
- You want Membership Rewards points and are comfortable with transfer partner redemptions.
- You do not need lounge access from this card.
