Card snapshot
What the card is built around
The Capital One Venture X is built around a clean value proposition: a $395 annual fee offset by two recurring annual benefits that together are worth approximately $400 — a $300 Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles. Everything beyond that — lounge access, 2x earning on all purchases, and 22 transfer partners — is the reason to hold the card long-term rather than break even and walk away.
The card is strongest for people who will use the $300 travel credit through Capital One Travel each year (which resets the math on the annual fee) and who value having a premium miles card with simple flat-rate earning and transfer partner flexibility. It is weaker for people who will not use the portal for the travel credit or who want a more extensive credit portfolio beyond what Venture X offers.
Portal earning and the 2x base
Hotels and rental cars
Earn 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. This is the highest rate on the card and is strictly portal-dependent. Direct hotel and rental car bookings earn the 2x base rate.
Flights and vacation packages
Earn 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation packages booked through Capital One Travel. Like the 10x rate, this requires booking through the Capital One portal rather than directly with airlines.
Everything else
Earn 2 miles per dollar on every purchase outside the portal. No category caps, no rotating categories, no exclusions. The 2x flat rate is one of the highest base earning rates available on a travel card without category restrictions.
When to consider booking direct
Portal bookings at 10x or 5x earn more miles, but direct bookings may preserve hotel loyalty status credits, elite night credits, upgrades, and free breakfast. For hotel stays where elite benefits have significant value, compare the mile gain from portal booking against the cost of losing those benefits.
Annual credits and recurring value
Lounge access
Venture X includes two lounge programs. The primary cardholder gets unlimited access to Capital One's own airport lounges plus Priority Pass Select membership for 1,300+ partner lounges worldwide. Significant policy changes effective February 1, 2026 affect authorized user and guest access — verify current terms with Capital One before planning lounge strategy.
Priority Pass Select
Priority Pass membership through Venture X allows the primary cardholder access to over 1,300 partner lounges globally. As of February 1, 2026, Priority Pass guest access has been removed for cardholders who do not meet the $75,000 annual spend threshold. Discounted walk-in guest rates apply: $45 per adult, $25 per child (ages 2–17). Some lounges impose their own visit caps at peak periods.
Capital One Lounges
Capital One's proprietary lounges at select U.S. airports offer food, beverages, and premium amenities. The primary cardholder retains unlimited access. Locations are expanding; verify current airports with Capital One's lounge page before travel planning.
Authorized users — Feb 2026 changes
As of February 1, 2026, authorized users no longer automatically receive lounge access. To grant a Venture X authorized user lounge access, the primary cardholder pays $125 per authorized user per year, for up to four users. Authorized users who are not enrolled for the $125 fee can enter as paid guests at discounted rates ($45 adult / $25 child) if the primary cardholder is present and eligible to bring guests.
Transfer partners
Capital One Miles transfer to 22 partners as of mid-2026 — the program with the most transfer partners among major U.S. card issuers. Most airline partners transfer at 1:1. Some partners transfer at less favorable ratios: Emirates Skywards at 4:3, EVA Air and Japan Airlines at 2:1.5, and JetBlue TrueBlue at 5:3. The Accor hotel program transfers at 2:1. I Prefer Hotels transfers in reverse at 1:2 (1,000 miles becomes 2,000 I Prefer points).
The program has no direct partnership with major U.S. legacy carriers (American, Delta, United), which limits domestic award booking via transfers. The strong paths are typically international: Aeroplan for Star Alliance, Flying Blue for SkyTeam, Turkish Miles&Smiles for Star Alliance, British Airways Avios for short-haul and partner awards, and Singapore KrisFlyer for premium cabin redemptions on Singapore and Star Alliance partners.
Using Capital One Miles effectively
Best airline paths
Aeroplan is a Star Alliance program with strong partner redemption options. Turkish Miles&Smiles offers access to Star Alliance partners at fixed award charts that can undercut airlines' own pricing. Avianca LifeMiles provides another Star Alliance access point with no close-in or fuel surcharge on most partners. Flying Blue covers SkyTeam. All transfer at 1:1.
Partners to approach carefully
JetBlue TrueBlue (5:3 ratio) is the main U.S. domestic airline accessible via transfer, but the ratio makes it cost more than it appears. Emirates Skywards (4:3) also loses value in the transfer. EVA and JAL (both 2:1.5) are useful for premium cabin redemptions on their metal and Star Alliance partners, but confirm the value before transferring.
Portal redemptions
If transfer partner redemptions are complex, miles can be used to offset Capital One Travel purchases at a fixed value (typically 1 cent per mile). This is simpler but gives up the potential upside of high-value award transfers. It is a useful floor to know when evaluating whether a transfer is worth the effort.
Insurance and protections
Capital One Venture X carries Visa Infinite benefits, which include a strong protection package. Coverage applies when the relevant purchase or trip is paid with the card and eligibility conditions are met. Review Capital One's current benefit guide for definitions, covered reasons, and exclusions before relying on any benefit.
Fit checklist
- You will use at least $300 in Capital One Travel bookings each year to extract the annual credit, which effectively reduces the fee to $95.
- You want lounge access (Priority Pass + Capital One Lounges) without paying the highest-tier premiums of competing cards.
- Your everyday spending is broad enough that a 2x flat rate on all purchases is more useful than juggling category multipliers across multiple cards.
- You want transfer partner access and are interested in international airline programs rather than major U.S. domestic carriers.
- You are comfortable managing a portal-dependent premium earning tier and a 2x base rate, rather than a large set of category bonuses.
