Card snapshot
What the card is built around
The Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card is the mid-tier Delta co-brand. It adds a 3x earning rate on Delta and hotel purchases relative to the Gold, an annual domestic companion certificate, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. The companion certificate is the most prominent benefit: if used for a round-trip domestic flight, it can deliver several hundred dollars in travel value — enough to offset the $350 annual fee for many Delta flyers who travel with a companion at least once per year.
Like all Delta co-branded cards, this card earns Delta SkyMiles — not Membership Rewards points. SkyMiles are redeemed for Delta flights, upgrades, and Delta Vacations packages and do not transfer to other airline programs.
Earning category details
Delta purchases
Earn 3 SkyMiles per dollar on eligible Delta purchases, including Delta flights. This is the highest earn rate on the card and the strongest category for Delta-loyal travelers.
Hotels
The 3x hotel category covers hotel purchases. Verify eligible hotel purchase types and any booking path requirements with American Express — portal bookings and direct bookings may differ in eligibility.
Restaurants worldwide
The restaurant category is global, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. where the merchant codes as a restaurant. Merchant category coding determines eligibility.
U.S. supermarkets
Earn 2 SkyMiles per dollar at U.S. supermarkets. Warehouse clubs, superstores, and specialty merchants may not code as supermarkets — verify with American Express.
Travel and card benefits
What is not included
The Delta SkyMiles Platinum does not include Delta Sky Club lounge access or Centurion Lounge access. Lounge access is a feature of the Delta SkyMiles Reserve card. The Platinum companion certificate is for domestic economy only — it does not include First Class or Comfort+ upgrade eligibility (that benefit is on the Reserve).
Companion certificate: how to think about it
Best case
A domestic round-trip companion ticket can be worth several hundred dollars on popular routes. If you regularly travel with a companion on Delta once per year, the certificate's value can exceed the annual fee difference between the Gold and Platinum.
Limitations
The certificate is for economy travel only. Taxes and fees (including government taxes and carrier-imposed fees) apply and are the cardholder's cost. The certificate may have route restrictions, blackout dates, or expiration windows. Verify all terms with American Express and Delta before attempting to use the certificate.
Booking mechanics
The companion certificate must be used when booking through Delta's channels — verify exact booking instructions with American Express and Delta when the certificate is issued. Planning is required; last-minute attempts to use a certificate may face availability constraints.
Fit checklist
- You travel domestically on Delta with a companion at least once per year and can use the annual companion certificate.
- Your spending is concentrated in Delta purchases and hotel stays where the 3x rate applies.
- You have not yet used a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit in the past 4.5 years and want to offset that application fee.
- You want SkyMiles rather than a transferable points currency and fly Delta regularly.
- You do not need Delta Sky Club or Centurion Lounge access — those benefits are on the Reserve.
